The first step to being productive is to fully utilize all hours of your day. Yes, we were given the same 24 hours as Beyonce, but we don’t have a full staff to take care of all of our needs. In order to make the most of our time, we must wake up early. These 7 steps can help trick yourself into being a morning person.
Stop Snoozing
If you are like me, you are best friends with the “snooze” button. There is something great about being able to push a button to allow yourself 10 extra minutes of sleep. However, the snooze button is actually a bad thing. Lets get into the habit of setting our alarm for the time we need to wake up. If necessary, put your alarm clock/cell phone on a dresser or another area that is not within arms reach. This will force you to wake up and physically get out of the bed. If you constantly hit the snooze button, you’re already waking up on the wrong foot. Ditch the snooze button to become a morning person.
Prepare Your Clothes The Night Before
Preparing your clothes the night before is a great habit. Trying to decide what to wear in the morning can be stressful and takes time away from your day. It actually makes the idea of waking up less pleasant. By preparing your clothes the night before, you’ll know if an article of clothing is unavailable. Your favorite sweater may be in the cleaners, dirty, or even damaged. If you prepare your clothes the night before, you will not have to worry about wasting time trying to decide on what to wear. You’ll appreciate being able to wake up knowing that part of your morning is taken care of.

Establish Your Schedule the Night Before
Planning your day the night before is key for your success. Before you go to bed, think about the things you would like to accomplish the next day. Be realistic and try not to overload your to do list. If you can successfully identify your live frog and your top 3, you’re on the right path. Mark Twain said you should eat a live frog first thing in the morning. By eating the live frog early, everything else in the day is easy. Your live frog is the hardest thing you need to do. Identify it, and eat it early…
Change Your Morning Mindset
In order to be successful and productive, we must change our mindset. Stop telling yourself that you are not a morning person or that you can not wake up early. You can do anything you put your mind to. Maybe you’ll need a cup of coffee or hot tea, but you can become a person that can function early in the morning.
If you want to change the world, you must first change the time you wake up. Mattie James Click To TweetPut a Bottle Water on Your Nightstand
Our bodies need water. Although many people (including myself) do not like the taste of it, water is imperative for our body. We function more properly when we are hydrated. Consider placing a bottle of water on your nightstand. Try to drink the entire bottle when you first wake up. Drinking a bottle of water first thing in the morning is a major accomplishment.
Share Your Goals with Your Family
Don’t forget to share your morning goals with your family. They may surprise you and offer tips they can assist you with. It would be great to get the whole family involved. There may be things they can do the night before to help take the stress off the next day.
Keep a Routine During the Weekend
One of the best things about the weekend or our days off is the ability to sleep in. If we can wake up whenever our bodies (or families) tell us to wake up, it’s a dream come true. Although I love sleeping in, I’ve discovered that I am more productive if I only sleep in an hour and a half later than the week day schedule. Since I only have to wake up early 4 days a week, it would be hard for me to maintain my normal schedule if I sleep in late three days in a row. Our bodies love repetition. Try to keep some form of routine during the weekend.
I hope you found these tips helpful. I would love to hear your thoughts on ways to become a morning person. Please leave any questions and or comments below.

Great tips! I really like how you added to keep a routine during the weekend. When I transitioned to waking up earlier in the morning, I naturally kept waking up at that same time on the weekends as well. No problem though as it allowed me to get things done.

I am up at 6am everyday during the weekday (have to get my son to high school by 7:10), prepping lunches and breakfast. It’s not too hard to be up but I have to admit, when the weekend rolls around, I appreciate some extra snoozing. Usually, I’m up anyway by 8 or 9 am so I guess I’m technically a morning person!

Yes, sleeping in till 8 or 9 is still pretty awesome. Great job, mom!

I so need help in this department. I tend to stay up way too late, then regret it terribly in the morning. I think the water on the bedside table is a great place to start!

It seems you may have too many items on your to do list. I understand, my plate is overflowing. I work full time, teach college online part time, run an interior design business and blog… and don’t forget the kids .. from 20 years old to 13 months old. And I’m a single parent. yikes!! Yes… we all wear multiple hats. But we must use strategies and processes to get everything done. And we must identify what needs to be done now and what can wait. It’s a struggle indeed. But take baby steps. Start with the tips in this post and I promise you’ll notice a change in your productivity.
