It doesn’t matter if you are a student, professional, or stay at home mom, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. Often, when we wake up in the morning, we may feel overwhelmed with all of the items we have on our agenda. These 7 suggestions will help eliminate some of the stress we feel when our alarm goes off in the morning.
1) Get your clothes ready the night before. Take a few minutes out of your evening to decide exactly what you are going to wear for the next day. Determine if you need to iron anything, find that special accessory, or even try on something you may not have worn for a while. By getting your clothes (under, outer, and shoes) ready the night before, you will not have to spend useful time in the morning looking for an article of clothing that you may have misplaced, put in the cleaners, or simply not available.
2) Pack your work or lunch bag. If you have a work or school bag, pack it with all of the items needed for the next day. Don’t wait until you are running out of the house to sign a permission slip for a field trip or to put an important document you may need in your work bag. By having your bag packed the night before, that is one less thing that you have to worry about doing in the morning or potentially forgetting. It’s also great to have a routine of just picking up your bag (which will be in the designated area) in the morning before walking out of the door. If you pack a lunch for yourself or your child, you may pack the non perishable items in the lunch bag and sit it on the counter. The refrigerated items can also be assembled together in the refrigerator and ready to be tossed in the lunch bag in the morning.
3) Determine the top three things you would like to accomplish tomorrow. Of course, we all have a list of 99 items we need to do. Simply determine the top 3 things the night before. In the morning, you can tackle those items first. Once completed, you will have less stress and can adequately complete other items on your to-do list if needed.
4) Relax your mind before going to bed. If you can, don’t just jump in the bed after a long day of work. Try to schedule a little down time to unwind. Drinking a glass of hot tea or warm milk, relaxing in a bathtub, and reading a few pages out of your favorite novel is an excellent way to relax before going to bed.
5) Set your alarm clock for the time you need to get up. Don’t allow for “snoozing” time. We all have been guilty of setting our alarm for a certain time, but deep down we know we are going to hit “snooze” until the last minute. By doing so, this only interrupts our full potential sleeping time. Ultimately, it does us more harm than good.
6) Cover up the light on your cable box, clock, or cell phone. At night, we may wake up several times and look at the time. When we look at the time, we are mentally calculating how much time we have left to sleep. We are wasting time and energy by doing so. If we know we will not be able to see the clock when we wake up in the middle of the night, we will just keep our head down and go back to sleep sooner. We will not waste time trying to calculate the time in our heads, causing us to stress out while we are supposed to be sleeping.
7) Develop a Schedule. Developing and sticking to a morning routine is great for time management. After you’ve implemented and mastered your morning routine, you should have less surprises in the morning. Perhaps, you may even become a happy morning person.
