Your home has a small living room, but that doesn’t mean you’re stuck with a space that feels cluttered or closed off. With the right layout choices and a little creativity, you can turn even the tightest room into somewhere open and functional. Read on to learn several clever tips for making the most of a small living room.

Choose Furniture That Does Double Duty

Every piece of furniture in a small living room should earn its spot, and a great way to accomplish this is by getting multifunctional pieces. For example, consider ottomans with internal storage, coffee tables with lower shelves, or a sofa with built-in drawers. You can even make your living room double as a guest space by exploring stylish, storage-friendly wall bed designs. Whatever you choose, multi-purpose furniture looks great and is the easiest path to maximizing functionality in a small space.

Keep the Floor Visible

The more floor you can see, the bigger the room feels. And this doesn’t mean you have to keep the floors barren. Instead, simply buy furniture with exposed legs to create visual breathing room between pieces and the ground. This is a subtle touch, but it really changes how spacious a room appears.

Mount Things on the Wall

If you can hang it on the wall, do it. You don’t want to lose floor space to, for example, a TV you could have easily mounted. Consider that and the following items that work well on the wall:

  • floating shelves
  • lights (such as sconces or string lights)
  • all small decorations
  • plants
  • bike racks
  • fold-out tables (if you don’t have a separate dining area)

Use a Light, Cohesive Color Palette

Dark colors absorb light and make walls feel closer. Light, neutral tones do the opposite. You don’t have to pick a glaring landlord white or even use the same color throughout the room. Just pick one or two warm neutrals you enjoy, and watch how they make your living room both cozier and more open.

Control the Clutter

Clutter shrinks a room faster than anything else, so make sure you follow these two key rules:

  • If it doesn’t need to be in the living room, get rid of it or keep it elsewhere.
  • Make sure you have sufficient storage for everything that needs to stay.

That multifunctional furniture we mentioned earlier, such as ottomans, sofas, and wall beds with integrated storage, is great for keeping your living room neat.

Use Mirrors to Add Depth

A well-placed mirror bounces light around the room and, in doing so, creates the illusion of more space. Just position a large mirror across from a window or near a light source, and it will make the room feel almost twice as open without any renovation.

Your Small Living Room Has Potential

Just because your home’s floor plan isn’t expansive doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy a cozy, calming space. By applying these tips, you can make the most of your small living room without adding square footage. Best of luck!
