Although there are many design rules and tricks used to decorate rooms, the following 9 steps are used by professional interior designers when decorating for their clients. By taking your time and following each step, you to can have a beautifully decorated room.
Identify the Room’s Purpose
The first step when designing a room is to identify your room’s purpose. Just because the room is in the front of your home, does not mean it has to be a formal living or dining room. I love repurposing rooms. Check out how I converted a closet into a home office. Stay tuned for my post on how I converted a spare bedroom into a grand plush closet. Many times, our current homes may not be exactly all we need. We need to learn how to fully utilize all areas and spaces in our homes.

Identify Inspiration
I love the Kohler commercial where the couple goes to the architect. The couple asked the architect to design a home around a faucet. Although that commercial maybe a little over the top, it still shows how an inspiration piece and help you decide on how to design a room. Inspiration is key in interior design. Your inspiration piece can be art, a picture, or even a swatch of fabric. There are so many elements in the universe that can provide inspiration.
Establish a Budget
No one likes to talk about money, but a budget is absolutely necessary in interior design. A budget is the difference between an interior designer recommending a $99 rug or a $9,000 rug. Don’t be afraid to create a budget. Also, be realistic with the budget. Remember that the budget may be fluid. You may decide to splurge on one thing, but be very frugal with others. Both options are perfectly fine.
Develop a Color Scheme
Colors are a major interior design element. Even the lack of color can make a statement. Determine which colors you want to use in the space. How do these colors make you feel? Do you prefer warm or cool colors? Don’t be afraid of color.
Select Furniture
The furniture selection is one of my favorite aspects of designing a room. It is also one of the most time consuming aspects. Your furniture should be reflect your own unique style. Your furniture should be beautiful, comfortable, and functional. I always recommend using your own interior designer instead of a furniture store interior designer. An in-store interior designer’s main focus is to sell you the furniture from their particular store. Those items may not be the best fit for your design style or your home.

Thanks for reminding me how important the budget is when it comes to interior design. My sister-in-law will be staying with us for a year and we’re planning to have an additional bedroom where she can stay. I’ll try to ask my husband and see how much we can spend on this project before consulting an expert in residential architecture design.

This sounds like a great resource for anyone tackling an interior design project, whether it’s a whole home refresh or just sprucing up a single room. Following a clear plan can make the difference between a space that feels pulled-together and one that’s just a collection of stuff. I’m particularly interested in the point about considering color first. Choosing a color scheme you love sets the tone for the whole design!
