In our current environment, we all have many items on our plate which leads to us feeling overwhelmed. We are trying to manage our work, life, health, family, and everything in between. We often feel the need to try to do everything and end up feeling overwhelmed. Consider these 7 tips to avoid feeling overwhelmed.
Learn to Say “NO”
It’s ok to say “no.” You have my permission. Don’t feel obligated to do everything for everyone. Of course, we all have responsibilities. But, we have to take our own health into consideration and be ok with saying no. Most of the times, we are putting more pressure on ourselves then we have to. The person that is making the request will probably be fine with your answer of no. They may simply forget about it or go to the next person. Say “no” if saying “yes” will make you feel overwhelmed.
Have an Absolute Day Off
Most people work 5 days a week, but still do not relax on the days off. We are running errands, taking care of home projects, or even working our side hustles on our “day off.” In order to decrease your overwhelm, have an absolute day off. Designate a day where you do not answer your work phone, check emails, or make plans to do favors for people.
Delegate and/or Outsource
At one time, I thought I had to do everything in my home. I thought I had to do all of the cooking, cleaning, and taking care of the children. Well, those days are over. I happily share the parental responsibilities. We take turns cooking and cleaning. Prior to COVID-19, I outsourced some of the household cleaning. We also outsource the lawn care. There is nothing wrong with delegating and outsourcing things that need to be done in your home and life to help avoid being overwhelmed.

“Me” Time
It’s perfectly fine and also recommended to have some “me” time. Although it may be a little difficult now because everyone is home, you should still try to make some time for yourself. Consider waking up an hour earlier or staying up after your family goes to sleep to be to catch up on your me time. You can simply meditate, read a book, and just sit on your patio. Creating a little “me” time will help you overcome overwhelm.
Date Night / Family Night Can Help You Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed
The idea of date night does not have to be a thing of the past. Try to be creative and think outside of the box. Are you already in contact with a relative or neighbor? If you have children, maybe that relative can look after your children while you and your spouse have a date night. A drive in movie or a walk in the park or even downtown can be a nice treat. A family game night or movie can also be something that can bring a sense of calm and decrease overwhelm.
Get the Proper Amount of Sleep
The ideal theory is that eight hours of sleep is required for everyone. That sounds great, but your body may require more or less. Determine how much sleep you need and strive to get those hours each night. You will wake up refreshed and less overwhelmed. Also avoid getting too much sleep. You could wake up physically drained.

Eat Healthy
As cliche as it may sound, our body is our temple. And what you put into it does affect your output. I enjoy “bad” food as much, if not more, than the next person. Yes, I am a foodie. There is just something wonderful about sweet, salty, greasy, and often fried food that just calls my name. But, I do understand that I can not allow myself to load my body all the time with those things. Bad food often makes your body feel drained and ill. Both are contributing factors to feeling overwhelmed. Try to eat more fruits and vegetables. Clean living and eating can help your overall health.
