10 Ways to Score Big for Your Home Decor at TJMaxx

January 12, 2016 by Divine Elements of Design 39 Comments

Do you like designer home decor accents, but not the designer price tag? Consider shopping at discount stores such as TJMaxx, Home Goods, and Marshalls. Many people often think about these stores for clothes and shoes, but often forget about them for their home decor items. These stores have beautiful department store grade home decor items such as furniture, rugs, lamps, wall art, mirrors, etc. Use the following 10 tips to score big.

(Disclaimer: This post is NOT sponsored by TJMaxx. TJMaxx is not aware of this post. However, if you are a TJMaxx representative or know one, please feel free to share it.)www.decoratorsvoice.com

  • Take your Time – When you are shopping for home decor accents and accessories, take your time. Do not rush. Do not try to “run into the store to grab something.”Being patient is a key element.
  • Buy It NOW – If you see an item that you think may be perfect, but not sure…. simply buy it now.. If it doesn’t work, return it immediately. If you decide that you want to purchase it later, I promise you, it will not be there. I’ve never regretted buying something. I’ve only regretted not buying it.
  • Avoid the weekends – Weekends are stores most business times. If possible, shop in the morning during the week.
  • Don’t be afraid to move items around the store – As a Certified Interior Decorator, I’m not afraid to rearrange the store if necessary. If you want to know how an item will look next to another item, move it…
  • Ask the sales associates for assistance – The sales associates are there to help. If you need them to move something, retrieve a price, or simply their opinion, don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Look at “put backs” – Many people (like myself) return items or decide not to purchase an item once they make it to the counter. The associates may not be able to return the items to the floor immediately. If you see something you like, don’t be afraid to ask.
  • Use the Rewards card – If you have a Rewards Card or a Rewards Credit Card, use it. I encourage you to use the Rewards Credit Card for your purchase, and them immediately pay the bill. By using the Rewards Card or Rewards Credit Card, you will receive points which may be used for future purchases and discounts.
  • Learn your store’s schedule – Many TJMaxx stores receive new merchandise on Wednesdays. However, your local store may be different. Learn the schedule and try to shop on the day they put out the new items.
  • Check out the Clearance section – Don’t forget the clearance section. I’ve found tons of awesome home decor items there.
  • Don’t be afraid to mix and match – Do you only see 2 different sets of 2 dining chairs? Your dining room doesn’t have to be matchy matchy. In fact, being unique and thinking outside the box will set your home apart from your neighbors. Be creative with your home’s decor.

I absolutely love TJ Maxx! I basically decorated my entire apartment from things at that store. I do have to disagree with you in regards to the tip about “running into the store to get something quickly.” I have found some of my best home decor items from just “running in quick” to get something else. LOL No matter what I can’t stay out of the home section and I always end up buying something I’m not supposed to!

I definitely never thought about inquiring about their merchandise schedule. Thanks for the tips!

Great suggestions! I especially love the tip about looking at “put backs” because I’m guilty of doing that all the time. I also definitely agree with buying it now at TJ Maxx. Things go quick and they are usually unique.

I haven’t been to these stores in AGES. I used to work really close to a TJ Maxx and would go in all the time for random yoga, decor, and clothing things and just loved it. I’d love to return–these are some great shopping tips–thanks for sharing 🙂 XOXO

Such awesome tips. We are new homeowners and I am definitely a “buy, try, and return” kinda gal. It’s sometimes the only way to know if something will work! TJMaxx is one of my favorites (I just scored a great basket for throws for $10 there last week)…. but admittedly, I get distracted by their clothes and shoes – ha!

I love Home Goods! I’m in the process of decorating our home office and bedroom. I peek in the store every time I’m in the shopping center to see if they have something that I need/want/will look great! Patience is another key!

Yes yes yes on the buy it now. I bought a side table I loved knowing it was a tiny bit defected. But I knew I would never find another one just like it at another Home Goods.

I wish we had TJ Maxx and Home Goods in Canada! We have Winners, which is the same family as TJ Maxx I think, and I find some great stuff there, but I’d love more stores to check all the time.

These are great tips. I totally agree on buying it now. I don’t know how many times I talk ,yield out of buying something and go back another time to find it gone. Also taken go your time is the only way to shop in there. I always find stuff buried when I take the time to look.

This is a lot, but super informative. I’ve recently become a pro at really shopping for clothes, shoes, and accessories, but for some reason I don’t have the hang of shopping for the house. I’m going to try this tips and kidnap my grandma (she should have been an interior decorator) and really get my apartment together this year!
