We are all guilty of making SMARTless home organizational and cleaning goals. How many times have you said “I’m going to purge my closet, garage, or office next weekend,” only to have the weekend come and go without taking the time to organize it? It happens to the best of us. Making random blanket plans are often not successful.
The next time you want to tackle an organizational task, set SMART home goals…
- Specific: This goal has a greater chance of being completed. Instead of saying you want to organize your closet, say “I’m going to replace all of my old wire hangers with new velvet hangers and sort my clothes by type.”
- Measurable: Try to set a quantifying measures. “I’m going to donate six pair of shoes to make room for my winter boots. “
- Attainable: Plan steps to attain this goal. “I want to be debt free by my birthday next year. I’m going to start the Dave Ramsey plan.”
- Realistic: You must be willing and able to complete this goal. “While the kids are at softball practice on Tuesdays and Thursdays, I’m going to work on filing my financial and important documents in my filing system.”
- Timely: Goals must have a deadline. With no deadline, there is no urgency. “I’m going to work on my junk closet for 30 minutes each day. It will be completely organized by the end of the week.”
Although I did not create the SMART technique, I pride myself in using it with my organizational clients to develop decorating and organizational plans for them. Thanks for the added confirmation that my goals should be narrow, realistic and timely. Sometimes, I have a bad habit of not doing my goals in a timely manner. This post will help me make my goals more timely. Thanks for such a great course and information on organization.

This is great! My life and home are the worst cluttered mess. I haven’t even unpacked all of my stuff since moving in July/August, but somehow my house looks like a tornado hit it and it’s starting to get ridiculous.

Don’t get overwhelmed. Try unloading one box at a time. And work on one room at a time. Good luck.

Wow! It’s been so long since I’ve thought of this acronym, what a good reminder. My goals have been a little loose… and unrealized as of late. I will have to try this out.
