If you have the space, creating a guest room is a wise decision. Whether you look forward to plenty of visitors or just want an extra bedroom for the holidays and emergencies, it’s nice to set up an extra living area. However, a guest bedroom is more than a cot and a bureau. It can serve the dual purpose of storage and sleeping quarters or be an office or other kind of workroom for the rest of the year. You should strive to make the room a cozy haven without sacrificing its more practical purposes. Here’s how to prepare a comfortable guest bedroom while ensuring it’s useful throughout the rest of the year.
Pick A Good Bed
If you haven’t already, decide whether the guest bedroom will serve any other purpose. A room recently vacated by a child who’s moved out might be more well-suited as an office, craft room, or similar workspace. Then again, it’s handy to have a room that is always ready for their visits. Keeping the old bed can work, but if you want to take greater advantage of limited space, invest in a sleeper sofa or futon for overnight guests. Be sure to provide cozy sheets and blankets!

Subtle Decor and Space
Obviously, you want to reflect your personal tastes in your furniture and décor throughout the house, but it’s beneficial to leave room for your guests’ personalities in this room. Keep the decorations to a minimum—a few tasteful pictures and knickknacks will do the trick. Provide a clock and a few homely items, but otherwise, leave space on the bureau, nightstand, or other furniture for their things. If the room doesn’t have a closet, provide an armoire or similar cabinet for their clothing and other items.
Handy Items
You’re not running a hotel, of course, but home guests still appreciate having the necessities handy. Unless they’ve lived there before, most guests won’t know where items such as soap, bathroom tissue, toothpaste, mouthwash, feminine hygiene products, and similar useful items are in the house. More than likely, they’ll bring their own grooming and hygienic products with them. However, you should give guests the option to use yours by putting out a basket or filling a drawer with items and alerting guests to their presence.

Create a Sanctuary
Here’s one more tip on how to prepare a comfortable guest bedroom. If your guest bedroom is an office, having a desk and reading or meeting area in place is a plus for guests. While they’re welcome in your home, they still need a space to relax, unwind, and be by themselves for a while. Ensure there’s a comfortable chair with a pleasantly warm light and a small table nearby. Many folks appreciate a convenient workspace, so set up a desk or side table where they can set up their computer, papers, reading materials, and so forth. Make your home their home, even if the arrangement is only temporary.
