Your linen closet doesn’t have to be a catch all area for linen and other items. Organizing your linen closet can be easy and fun. Take pride in decluttering this space. I promise you will love the results. Hard work definitely pay off. Use these 7 steps to organize your linen closet.
Remove Everything
I know this is a daunting task. But you must first remove everything from your linen closet. If your closet was like mine, you had tons of unused and useless items in your linen closet. You probably also have tons of other homeless items which do not belong in there. I was surprised with all the random items that were stored in this space.
Clean Your Linen Closet
After you’ve completely emptied out the closet, you must clean it. You want to start with a clean and fresh foundation. Wipe down the shelves. I used Mrs. Meyers All Purpose Cleaner to clean the shelves in my linen closet. Also, don’t forget to vacuum or mop the floor. Make sure you address all debris and stains.
Decide What To Keep In the Space
I believe this is the most important step. Determine the purpose of the closet. Determine what you want to store in the closet. Ask yourself the hard questions. What do you need to store in the linen closet? Can this item be stored in another location? If example, the bathroom cabinet? Do I really need these things. For me, my two separate linen closets served two separate purposes. There is only one bedroom downstairs in my house. The bedding for that bedroom is kept in the bedroom. Therefore, I did not store any sheets in the downstairs linen closet. I was able to utilize that space for light bulbs.

Typically our linen closet can become a catch all area for other items. After you’ve determined what you actually want to store in the linen closet, find a home for all of the homeless items. Only return things to your closet that will actually use.

Utilize Baskets and Trays
In addition to baskets looking pretty and well organized, it actually ensures you don’t store stuff that doesn’t belong in it. I love decorating with baskets and trays because it allows me to set limits on the amounts of things I can store in it. For example, the “bath towel” basket in my upstairs linen closet can only hold six bath towels. That is more than enough for my son who uses the upstairs bathroom. There is no need to have 784,861 bath towels upstairs. Anything over six can be donated.

During this step, determine how many items of kind do you need. I’m 99.9% positive you have at least one excess item in your linen closet. Many of these extra items are still in good use. When I decluttered my linen closet, I found full and time size sheets that I no longer had a use for. I had tons of towels that I could never use. Those extra items were donated to a local shelter.
Develop a Strategy
Now that you have returned only the items you want to keep, develop a strategy to make sure your closet does not become decluttered again. You can establish the one in one out technique. This will make sure you don’t have an overwhelming amount of things.
