No matter if you’re desperate to sell your property today or biding your time until the right buyer comes, you need to know the latest interior design trends. Having that knowledge will help you stage your house perfectly and attract up-to-date, sophisticated and well-paying clients. Author Lilly Miller from Smooth Decorator shares her top tips.
A staged house always looks more modern and stands out from the competition. However, one thing about trends is certain—they change every year. So, if you’re planning to sell this year, make sure to hire professionals who can stay on top of these trends:
De-clutter
You might think that staging involves filling the house with as many things as you can fit to show off the storage space. However, that’s a huge mistake, especially today when minimalism still reigns. If you want to show off your home’s capacity, make sure to store everything that you can hide (family photos, personal art, collectibles…) Also, don’t just shove everything into the closet before potential buyers come. Many of them will wish to look inside the closets, so prevent surprise stuff avalanche. The best way to get the idea of a space is to de-clutter it to the max.
Add Trending Colors
Every year, there’s a new must-have color in the picture. For 2020, designers and trendsetters chose Classic Blue (the Pantone color of the year 2020), a cool relaxing color with plenty of depth and character. Make sure to introduce this color into your space during the staging phase, but stick to smaller green items and fabrics. For instance, a simple Classic Blue painting or a few blue accessories in the foyer will do the trick without being overwhelming.

Go Natural And Neutral
Adding Night Watch Green to your space is a great start, but that’s not all that you need to do. Buyers today love greenery and natural feel in their homes, especially Millennials living in urban environments of Europe and Australia. Natural aesthetic concentrates on boosting sunlight, airiness, natural materials and simple, neutral colors all people are attracted to. So, consider introducing plenty of greenery in the living room, herbs in the kitchen and natural colors throughout the space. Warm tones like champagne, mushroom, amber and jade are very calming and cozy.
Collaborate with Your Agent
While you can always stage a home by yourself, professional advice is always helpful. Hiring professionals is one of the best trends we’ve seen in the last decade because it works, especially if you’re trying to sell a property in tricky markets like the Australian. Just by contacting an experienced real estate agent in Northern Beaches you can learn plenty of tricks and get useful advice. Pros can help you achieve shorter market time and better prices, which are the key to a successful sale and good profit.
Define spaces
If you have an extra room you use for storage or various other activities, make sure to clean up your act. Every room in the house needs to have a clearly-defined role! Do your best to turn your “junk” room into an office, guest room or playroom for kids, depending on your target audience.
Create a Genderless Bedroom
You might love your peach-colored bedroom, but an average man will roll his eyes hard at the sight of this space. Your safest bet is to create a bedroom that’s genderless, so it can appeal to the largest number of people. Just opt for Japanese bedroom decor, with crisp-white linens, Shoji screen and neutral colors on the walls. Pro tip: make sure your closet is neat. This way, you can open some doors and show off how much space there is for storing clothing and other items. For many couples, closet space can make or break a deal, so even if you need to keep a few boxes of your things in off-site storage, it will all be worth it.

Utilize Awkward Spaces
Every home has one or two awkward areas that usually go unused. Well, in order to turn these negative sides of your space into great selling points, do something innovative with them. You can turn your space beneath the stairs into a small work/homework station, turn an alcove into a home command center with planners and schedules and give your nook a purpose with built-in shelving.
Pay Attention to Your Outdoor Space
Boosting your curb appeal is very important since first impressions can make or break your sale. Most people eyeing a house will first drive by and only after they like what they see will they wish to look inside. So, what you need to do is rent a power washer and give your driveway, walkways, stairs and siding a nice clean. Give some attention to your flower beds and plant something fresh and blooming. Keep your lawn mowed and bushes trimmed. Additionally, go interesting when it comes to house numbers—that’s a cheap improvement.

Great post! What could be also helpful is that when you sell your home, the buyer’s funds pay your mortgage lender and cover transaction costs. The remaining amount becomes your profit. That money can be used for anything, but many buyers use it as a down payment for their new home. This is how it works 🙂

Great post, Lilly! Your tips on interior design trends for staging a house are invaluable. De-cluttering is definitely a crucial step to create a spacious and appealing environment. Incorporating the trending colors, like Classic Blue, in smaller accents is a smart move to stay up-to-date without overwhelming potential buyers. I also appreciate your emphasis on a natural and neutral aesthetic, as it appeals to a wide range of people. Collaborating with a real estate agent and defining each room’s purpose are practical tips that can make a significant difference. Lastly, utilizing awkward spaces creatively is a fantastic idea to maximize the potential of every corner.
