7 Ways To Balance Color and Texture on Your Gallery Wall

October 8, 2025 by Divine Elements of Design Leave a Comment

A gallery wall can be a stunning focal point, but achieving the right mix of elements often feels complicated. Juggling color, texture, and composition requires a thoughtful approach to create a display that harmonizes with a home’s aesthetic.

Knowing how to mix and match artwork with frames and other decor creates an arrangement that feels curated and personal. With a clear strategy, anyone can learn to balance color and texture on their gallery wall. Bring your art together on display with these tips.

Plan Your Layout

Before nailing anything, lay out the collection on the floor to see how the pieces interact. This allows for adjusting spacing, swapping frame positions, and trying different arrangements without fixing anything permanently. It saves time and avoids damaging walls. Plus, it helps visualize the final display, making it easier to identify any color or texture imbalances before hanging the art.

Establish a Color Palette

A unified color palette brings a gallery wall together. Select a few core colors and distribute them throughout the arrangement. This creates a sense of rhythm and flow.

  • Neutrals as a Foundation: Use black, white, or gray frames to ground the collection.
  • Accent Hues: Introduce one or two accent colors through the artwork or mats to add pops of visual interest.
  • Metallic Tones: Gold, silver, or bronze frames can introduce warmth and a touch of sophistication.

Vary Frame Styles and Materials

Mixing various frame materials introduces visual interest. Pairing a sleek metal frame with a rustic wooden one creates a striking contrast. This play of textures enhances the gallery wall’s appeal. Consider combining ornate, detailed frames with simpler, more understated designs. This contrast adds depth and prevents the display from appearing monotonous. The aim is to curate a collection that feels thoughtfully assembled over time.

Incorporate Three-Dimensional Objects

Adding three-dimensional items among the framed art brings a delightful surprise of texture. Small shelves, decorative plates, or woven wall hangings can beautifully break up the flatness of a traditional gallery wall, adding depth and a lovely tactile feel. Choose objects that blend well with your existing color palette to keep everything looking harmonious and inviting.

Mix Different Art Styles

Combining various art styles contributes to a dynamic display. A mix of photographs, line drawings, and paintings creates a more interesting composition than a wall of uniform pieces.

For instance, the smooth surface of a photograph contrasts nicely with the texture of a painting’s canvas. Abstract art prints are also a smart investment because they introduce color and form without depicting a specific subject, blending effortlessly with other styles.

Use Mats to Create Breathing Room

Matting serves a dual purpose: it protects the artwork and gives it visual space. A mat separates the art from the frame, drawing the eye toward the piece. White or off-white mats offer a classic look, but colored mats can tie into the overall palette. Using mats of different widths can also add another layer of visual interest to the arrangement.

Step Back and Edit

Once the gallery wall is up, take a step back to assess the overall composition. It may take a few adjustments to find the right balance. Live with the arrangement for a few days, and do not hesitate to swap pieces or change their positions. Finding the best ways to balance color and texture on your gallery wall is an ongoing process of refinement.
