5 Unique Places for Fun Textiles in Your Home

March 18, 2026 by Divine Elements of Design Leave a Comment

The magical, wonderful world of textiles lets us deck our homes in color, pattern, and softness. If you love putting fabric in your space and have an artistic heart, then you’ll love these unique places for fun textiles in your home.

Inside Your Kitchen Drawers

Pop open your utensil drawer, and what do you see? Probably a jumbled mess of spatulas and whisks clanging around. Line those drawers with vintage fabric instead of boring liner paper. The designs will make you smile every time you grab a spoon, and the fabric cushions your tools and protects the drawers’ wooden base. To keep the fabric smooth and protected, I recommend using adhesive drawer liner or fabric-safe double-sided tape.

Lampshade Makeovers

Your basic beige lampshades are crying out for attention. Recover them with unexpected textiles like vintage scarves, embroidered tea towels, colorful bandanas, or hand-blocked Indian cotton. The light filtering through patterned fabric creates gorgeous ambience in the evening. In fact, you can completely transform a room’s mood just by switching out lampshades.

For a quick and creative lampshade makeover, you only need a few simple supplies that are easy to find on Amazon. Start with a plain white or neutral drum lampshade, which provides the perfect blank canvas for your design. Choose a decorative fabric such as vintage scarves, cotton fabric squares, colorful bandanas, or Indian block-print textiles to give the shade personality. To attach the fabric smoothly, use fabric glue or spray adhesive, which helps secure the material without creating bumps or wrinkles. You may also want a pair of sharp fabric scissors for clean cuts and a measuring tape or ruler to ensure the fabric fits the shade perfectly. These simple tools make it easy to transform an ordinary lampshade into a unique decorative accent that adds warmth, pattern, and character to your space.

Staircase Risers

The vertical face of each stair step is prime real estate for textile art. Upholster your stair risers with fabric strips in complementary patterns, creating an ascending gallery of color and design. Choose durable canvas or tapestry-weight textiles and get creative with mixing and matching designs. When you’re done, every trip upstairs will be a visual adventure.

Custom Awning Canvases

Your outdoor spaces deserve textile love too. Finding the right color for your retractable awnings transforms your patio or deck into an extension of your interior style. Nowadays, weather-resistant outdoor fabrics come in hundreds of hues and patterns that’ll hold up to sun and rain.

Cabinet Door Interiors

What if there were a colorful surprise waiting for you inside each cabinet in your home? You can make that happen by attaching fabric panels to the inside wall of your cabinet doors using starch, Velcro strips, double-sided tape, or magnetic backing. If you use Velcro or magnets, you can swap the designs out seasonally.

These unique places for fun textiles in your home prove that you can get creative with fabric placement outside of curtains and cushions. Start with one idea today and see where your imagination takes you!
