Clutter is a seven-letter word we all dislike. Household clutter comes in many forms. It can be a mountain of clothes that need to be put away or an overabundance of unopened mail on a table. There are ways to eliminate clutter and take control of your life.
Get Your Paper Files in Order
Paper is the one item that enters our home every day. We receive mail, circulars, documents, children’s homework, receipts, and many other forms of paper each day. Sometimes these items are needed. Often the many paper items we receive only contribute to our clutter and can become overwhelming. Take time to establish a system to keep your paper clutter to a minimum. Check your mail every day. At that time, determine if an item needs to be filed, set aside for further action, or shredded/recycled. By checking your mail each day, you will help eliminate tons of unopened mail and paper clutter.
You can also take time to unsubscribe to paper billing. With today’s technology, you can simply download your statements and save them on a file on your computer for easy access. These steps are easy. In addition to helping eliminate your paper clutter, you are also creating green and environmental friendly habits.

Start a Stress Free Donation Box
With our busy schedules, it’s hard to find time to purge our closets and drawers. Instead of designating a time to purge, apply the “stress free donation box” method. Place a box or bag in an out of the way area in your home. If possible, placing it in or near your closet or drawers is perfect. As you gather your daily clothes from your closet or drawers each day, simply toss clothes that you no longer wear in the box. Don’t spend any additional time on this task. If your hand happens to touch something you know you no longer wear, grab it and toss it in the box.
Within a few weeks, the box will be full of clothes to donate without you ever having to take time to purge. Take the clothes to a donation center or contact a company to pick them up. You may also look through your mail for a colored postcard from a donation site to see when the organization is picking up items in your area.
Ditch the Junk Drawer
We all have a catch-all drawer for items such as expired batteries, broken pens, and faded receipts. For some reason, we are programed to stuff “junk” in the drawers. As hard as it may sound, try to ditch the junk drawer. Go through the drawer and toss all trash in the trash can. Assign a home for all other items. If you choose to keep those items in the drawer, keep it organized and determine which items will be placed in the drawer. Consider purchasing a drawer organizer to make sure the drawer doesn’t become overcrowded with items.
