From Drab to Fab: How to DIY an Old School Children’s Desk

March 14, 2023 by Divine Elements of Design Leave a Comment

You don’t have to break the bank to create a fun and functional desk for your children. Sometimes the perfect desk may be right in front of you. You can upcycle an old school desk into a glam creative area. Check out how I did it.

Find A Desk

Search places such as garage sales, resale shops, antique malls, Facebook marketplace and Offerup. My husband found these two desks for $45 on Offer Up. They were in pretty good condition. Since then, I have found several other desks. Amazon actually has a newer version available.

Determine the Theme

Since the desks were going to go into my daughter’s room, we decided on a pink glam theme. Their room is pink and silver with touches of marble. We decided to paint the desks pink, paint the legs a matte gray, and add marble contact paper for the top.

Prepare For The Project

We started with placing an Amazon order. I purchased the following items:

The Steps

steps for diying the desk
  1. Remove the legs and/or top of the desk. Separate the pieces that you want to paint.
  2. Sand the desk to allow the paint to adhere properly.
  3. Apply a few coats of spray paint.
  4. Allow the paint to dry before reassembling the desk.
  5. Apply the contact paper to a clean surface.
  6. Add the clean plastic to the top to protect the contact paper from wear and tear.

Personalize The Desk

Now that your desk project is complete, you can now bring your child’s personality. Decorate the desk with functional yet stylish decor pieces.
