Thanks! My cousin is an interior designer. The one thing she always told me was to not buy stuff on a whim because then it could be a mismatch xD What do you think? :3
Divine Elements of Design says
She is right, especially if you are going for a more symmetrical look. However, it is also nice and unique to mix and match items in your home to add your own personality to it.
Yesenia Morales says
Yeah. We have a word in Mexico that goes “chilaquileado,” it is a weird use of a word derived from a dish, but the point is that its mismatch is so bad you can’t tell what it’s supposed to be… I think this was more what she referred to xD
Divine Elements of Design says
Oh, well yes… We need to stay away from chilaquileado.. We don’t want our homes looking overloaded and full of clutter. Less is always more.
Maria - Dapper House Designs says
All of these are great tips but my favorite is“Take your time, wait for the pieces that make your heart race, add things with meaning.” Cassie Freeman, http://www.hisugarplumsblog.com. I love hunting for just the right piece, it makes a huge difference!
Divine Elements of Design says
Yes it does. Thanks for stopping by.
Jennifer says
Add things with meaning….yes.
Bernie says
The quote about waiting for the pieces that make your heart race is so true. Unless you can’t manage without a stopgap of some sort, it’s not worth the compromise.
As for me, I love the thought of the house being “a machine for living”. It *sounds* heartless, but better organisation in a way that actually reflects how you use your space makes so much difference. Biggest impact here? In the kitchen, where crockery, glassware and cutlery unload into cupboards right beside the dishwasher. A small change, but a brilliant time saver.

I have heard others say that you do not always have to buy furniture as a set. Because sometimes they would look odd. What can you say about this? I do not know a thing about interior design so I always intend to buy furniture as a set. All I know is that the combination of black and white is good.
Divine Elements of Design says
I agree, buying furniture as a set often leaves a “furniture” store look in a room. I always tell my client that the matching “sofa, loveseat, and matching chair” look in outdated. Don’t be afraid to think out the box and show your creativity. Feel free to use the colors in the sofa, pillows, or even curtains when looking for ideas for other furniture pieces.

I like your tip to never neglect the details of your decor. My mom wants to redecorate her living room so that it can look a little bit nicer and more modern. It would probably be good if she just changed up some of the details and bought a few accessories that could elevate the style of the room.
