Just because you reside in a rental doesn’t mean you can’t decorate it to your own style and decor. There are tons of things you can do that will not cause permanent changes to the home. This is your home for now. It should be comfortable and reflect your own personality. Check out these 9 Ways to Decorate a Rental.
1. Get Creative With Paint or Wallpaper
Many rentals allow you to paint as long as you paint the walls back white upon your move out. If you’re able to paint, definitely take advantage of this option. Paint is one of the most effective ways to add color, decor, and vibrance to your home.

2. Go Bold with a Rug
Rugs are a great way to add color and dimension to your rental. There are so many rug styles available. Be creative with colors and textures. Don’t be afraid to layer rugs. This will give a unique look.
3. Maximize Light and Upgrade Fixtures
Light is a natural design element. Maximize all natural and artificial light in this space. Light opens the space and makes your rental decor look bigger and more appealing. Feel free to upgrade fixtures as long as you replace the original fixture prior to moving out.
4. Floating Shelves
Floating shelves can serve as function and decor in your rental home. They can be used in basically every room in your home. I always warm people about flat surfaces, so make sure you keep it decluttered.

5. Reinvent Spaces
Customize the home for your own liking. Just because a room is labeled for a particular purpose doesn’t mean it has to serve that purpose. I’ve converted closets into home offices, dining rooms into bedroom, and bedrooms into closets. Think outside the box.
6. Window Treatments
Many rentals may provide standard plastic or wooden blinds. They are typically used for privacy and not very aesthetically pleasing. Decorate your rental’s window by adding beautiful window treatments. Don’t feel obligated to the tradition drapes. Try stationary panels, a nice valance, or even roller shade. Divine Elements of Design offers an excellent custom window treatment program using materials from Carole Fabrics.
7. Switch Out The Hardware
Kitchen and bathroom hardware can make a big impact in your home. Replacing hardware is simple and easy. The only thing you need is a screwdriver and new hardware. Inexpensive, yet stunning hardware can be purchased from Home Depot, Lowes, and even Amazon.
8. Art
Start with a statement or inspiration piece of art. This item can be your focal point and pull all items together. Remember, just because you’re in a rental doesn’t mean you can’t decorate it to your personal style. If you’re unable to hang art with nails, consider Command Hooks.
9. Use House Plants
Decorating with house plants are an excellent way to bring the outside elements inside your home. In addition to being beautiful, houseplants also have a help keep your home smelling fresh by increasing your indoor air quality.
