Area rugs bring a distinctive appeal to an interior design. It brings warmth to a space and pulls the furniture pieces together which helps in defining a space. Picking out the correct size of a rug is a fundamental step when designing any room. A properly-sized rug—with a smart layout and right-sized furniture— also makes a space appear wider.
The shape of your rug must echo the shape of your furniture to give it a designer touch. Area rugs also help create sub-spaces in an open-concept living room by separating zone from one another. Area rugs come in a variety of designs and sizes and choosing the correct size works wonders.
Place All Legs On the Rug
If you’re adding a rug to a large space—you can let all the legs on board using a large area rug. You can keep your sofa, ottoman, or coffee table—all the seaters on the rug. Make sure that you leave 30″ to 36″ or at least 18″-24″ of a walkway between the wide furniture pieces. You can plan the layout by leaving ample space for walkways and then use painter’s tape to draw the right size of the area rug having all the legs on board to measure it later on.
Only Front Legs On the Rug
If you’re planning to place only the front legs on the area rug—you’ll need a different size of rug. This layout will make your space appear wider even when it’s not. For this, your rug must go under about 1/3 of your furniture pieces. For example: If your chair is 24 inches, make sure your area rug goes about 8 inches under it.

You might want your rug to float in your space—having no legs on it other than the coffee tables. You can simply design a perfect floating layout of space by placing your area rug. It rather looks more alluring when you leave no more than a 5-inch gap between the rug and the sofa.
Try Out the Amorphous Float
The area rugs come in many shapes other than classic rectangular ones that work the best floating. You can include these shapes of the rug by the fire mantles, in the kids’ room or sub-spaces of the living room, or in the rooms with irregular shapes. You only need to consider the size of the room while trying the amorphous float. Too big an area rug won’t add appeal to your space so you can choose the size proportionate to your sectional sofa.
An area rug has the power to uplift the interior design of a space. This one piece of rug can alter the entire look of a space—only if you choose the size right. So, just utilize these amazing tips on choosing the rug size and make your space more luxurious than ever! Enjoy! =)
