10 Strategies to Avoid Feeling Overwhelmed

December 1, 2015 by Divine Elements of Design 31 Comments

Have you ever wondered how some people seem completely busy but aren’t overwhelmed? They seem to be super productive but tend to have a perfectly balanced home and work life. Yes, we all have the same 24 hours in a day. Instead of trying to live like a “Stepford Wife, ” we can achieve our own peace and happiness. I use each of the following strategies to avoid overwhelm, which results in having a productive personal and business life.

busy

  1. Develop and use Strategies & Systems. Being organized is key. (See info about my free course below)
  2. Invest in a monthly relaxation subscription such as Massage Envy.
  3. Take your dog for a walk outside.
  4. Listen to (positive) music often.
  5. Keep a gratitude journal.
  6. Unplug often.
  7. Arrive 20-30 minutes early to work and/or appointments. Being late can be stressful.
  8. Say “no” to people and don’t feel guilty or think twice about it. Don’t feel obligated to do everything for everybody.
  9. Take vacations or stayactions as often as you can. Work hard, play hard.
  10. Schedule down time. Don’t forget to get your manis & pedis. Make sure to take time for yourself and/or your family.

If you are in need of assistance getting organized, sign up for my FREE “5 Days to an Organized Home & Life” email course. Each day for 5 days, you will receive an email with tips and suggestions for getting organized. You’ll also receive a free eBook. Yes to the unplugging! I think it helps to have set periods every week or day when you can do this.

Great post. I hate it when overwhelm shows up. It can be so disruptive. I like to focus on with thing at a time and work my way through

I LOVE this list! As a young mom of two littles, I have little time to myself. I need to implement a few of your strategies to lessen my stress level. Lol.

I agree with everything you posted and would probably add to eat whole foods for two weeks and check back on how you feel. Cutting out caffeine is another way to feel less stressed and overwhelmed as well. What we eat (and drink) make a HUGE impact on the way we feel and act. I’ve been waaay too stressed lately so I’ve started this week trying to eat a little better each day. Hopefully my waistline will thank me as well.

What am excellent idea!!! You are 100% correct!!! What we put in our bodies is very important and affects how we feel, act, and perform. I would love to see how you feel after your two weeks of eating whole foods. Good luck!!!

Being overwhelmed is a horrible feeling. I love your tips and I try to do these most day, but they are easy to forget when you are already feeling overwhelmed. I really enjoyed this post xx

Yes, when you are already overwhelmed, it can be hard to remember to do these things. This is why I like keeping a planner and planning out my days and activities. Yes, I have my to do list, but you must schedule in your “me” and relaxation time.

I definitely have to be better about #10. I’m so bad about taking time for myself and I know it causes me to build up stress I should be releasing through a little self-indulgence. I told my husband I want to get a mani before we travel for Christmas and since he’s always telling me to do things for myself I know he’ll hold me accountable.

That is a wonderful idea. He will really love it. It’s something he wouldn’t do for himself, so it will be a real treat for him.
