Maintaining an organized closet does not have to be a chore. Don’t let clutter and unworn clothes take it over. Use these 10 Easy Closet Organizational Tips to keep an organized closet used by professional organizers.
1) Separate Clothes You Don’t Wear.

Store clothes with “sentimental” value in another location. Keep your autographed jersey or shirt from your first date separate from your everyday clothes. It takes up useful real estate in your closet.
2) Purge Clothes You’ll Never Wear Again

If you haven’t worn it in a year, remove it from your closet. Conduct a closet rehab twice a year. I know its hard to part with old clothes. But imagine how great it will feel to have a closet of clothes you actually wear.
3) Use The Same Style Hangers in Your Closet

Use the same style hangers for a uniform look. “NO WIRE HANGERS!!!” Wood or velvet hangers are an excellent choice.

If it doesn’t fit perfectly or damaged, remove it from your closet. You are less likely to wear an item that doesn’t fit properly.
5) Iron Clothes Before Putting Them In The Closet
When deciding what to wear the next day, having to iron clothes can make your choice for you. Ironed clothes will also hang properly and take up less space.
6) Keep Like Items Together
Long sleeve button down shirts, polo style shirts, blazers, work pants, etc… It’s easier to put items away when they have a home.
7) Remove Out of Season Clothes
Winter sweaters and tweed suits should be removed for spring and summer. This will allow more space for shorts and tank tops.
8) Keep a Donation Box Handy

You don’t need to designate a day to purge your closet for items to donate. With our busy schedule, its often hard to find the time to perform this task. I keep a box handy at all times just for this reason. Occasionally toss items in the box as you find items to donate. When the box is full, donate it. No stress on timing.
9) Sort by Color

By sorting your clothes by color, it will be easy to find and put away clothes. It will also give your closet a beautiful appearance.
10) Keep Accessories Separate
Accessories such as shoes, scarfs, and belts should be organized in their own section. This is also make it easier to actually your different items more.

It’s tough to keep closets organized. Systems are important.

Donation box is a huge one for me. It helps you part with the items you are deciding against in the moment and you remember why you’re getting rid of them instead of 2 months later when they’ve been sitting stagnant in your closet and you’re convinced you’ll wet it again. Time to get new hangers. 🙂
Divine Elements of Design says
If it wasn’t for the easy access donation box, I’d probably never get the time to donate clothes.
Bernie says
Ah, we’re of a single mind on all that. Although I have to confess I don’t iron, but I try very hard not to buy anything that needs ironing. 😉
The thing that’s been a game changer for me is buying a lot of the same hanger: thin and velvety. They grip the clothes much better, and it’s definitely made life easier.
Divine Elements of Design says
Yes, those thin velvety hangers are game changers… I have about a million wood ones so it’s really too late for me to start over.

Great tips. The donation box has been a huge plus for the whole family here. We leave it in the front hallway and take it in when it is full.

I really need to pull out things which I’m hoping to fit in 1 day. Keeping donation hamper in sight is a great tip.
Divine Elements of Design says
Look at it this way.. if you can get down to “that” weight, you deserve a new outfit. 🙂
Michelle says
I need to do some of these better, like separating clothes I don’t wear and clothes that don’t fit. I do separate by color and have the same hangers.

Good tips! The hardest one for me is parting with clothes that have sentimental reasons.😔
Divine Elements of Design says
Yes, that’s the hardest for me. But trust me, you can’t keep everything. And when you decide to only keep the minimum, you’ll appreciate it.

CLOTHES IRON says
Steam irons are not illustrated the same. There are those that are delineated with an agreeable handle while others don’t have a pleasing handle. You should look for an iron with a handle that is smooth and sensitive to get a handle on. The handle should not be too wide making it troublesome for you to hold. Assurance that the iron doesn’t have hard edges and wrinkles that can jump into your hands in this manner making it clumsy to use.
