There are many reasons people choose to have neutral walls. They may not have permission to paint, afraid of the color commitment, or simply unable to paint due to the space. There is power in neutral walls. Having neutral walls does indeed have many benefits. You can easily completely change the outlook of the room in a matter of minutes without calling your professional painter.
Personally, I love neutral walls. I love being able to bring colors into the room by other means. There are actually tons of neutrals to select from. They range from cool and crisp to warm and vibrant. If you are a DIYer, I recommend the color professionals at Sherwin Williams for assistance in selecting the perfect neutral color for your space. They are trained in color coordination. (Unlike many of the big box stores, the person behind the paint counter is not the hardware associate filling in while the paint associate is on a break). Below are just a few ways to bring color into a neutral painted room.
- Large art work can make a bold statement. Don’t be afraid to be creative with the pieces you hang on the wall.
- Decor pillows can be changed to update the room’s decor. Read my previous post on how to keep your pillows looking fabulous when you have pets, children, (or a spouse, lol).
- Window treatments can be bold and beautiful. They can provide an excellent vocal point in your room.
- Don’t be afraid to add a fun accent rug in your room. It will draw positive attention to the space. Fun textured shags are a perfect design element.
- Do you have a green thumb? The green and natural colors of your house plants will drastically pop more against the neutral wall.
- I love decor accessories… Use the rule of three to add color to the room with your accessories.

I don’t have a color commitment, but I live with someone who does! The colorful pops in art pieces and rugs are a good compromise. Some good advice, especially regarding the house plants as another way to add color.

I really wish I had a green thumb. House plants don’t survive in my home. Lol

All of these tips are spot on! These are so helpful 😀 Love the green thumb one! All homes should have some real live plants to keep the air nice an crisp!

You are so right. I didn’t mention the benefits to the air by having real plants. Thanks for mentioning it. 🙂
