As an interior designer, I’ve completed numerous projects for myself, clients, and family and friends. Some jobs require tons of research and resources, while other require simple redecorating. For small “weekend projects” which require simple redecorating, I recommend following the three Rs of redecorating.
Rearrange Your Furniture
Sometimes by simply rearranging your furniture in a room, it can give it the new look you desire. Consider moving furniture away from walls or creating small vignettes in your space. By using your existing furniture in a new way, it may look like a completely different space. Although your home may pose space planning issues, you may only be able to rearrange the small items. This is fine. Consider rotating your table, or swapping your sofa and love seat. You can also rearrange small furniture pieces such as accent tables and chairs.

Replace Outdated Items
Yes, you may love your green leather recliner from the 1990’s, but its shelf life has expired. Don’t feel obligated to hold on to every item in your home, even if it is in perfectly good shape. Replacing outdated items is key to redecorating. Although I do not recommend going with the trends, I do recommend staying away from pieces that date your home as old and outdated.

Redecorating By Repurpose
For the purpose of redecorating, repurpose has two meanings. You may repurpose items by using it for a different purpose then originally intended. For example, you may decide to use the extra parsons chair from your dining room as a computer chair or living room accent chair. You may be pleasantly surprised how using an item for another purpose can add value to the item and space. Many people call this technique “shopping your home.” Your home may have many valuable items which were previously overlooked. You can also consider repurposing spaces.
