Do you have a certain set of skills that you’ve acquired over a period of time? Skills that are unique and you enjoy doing? Have you ever considered taking those skills and starting a side hustle? Check out these 7 awesome reasons to start a side hustle.
Get Paid to Do Something You Enjoy
Wouldn’t it be great to get paid to do something you enjoy doing? I started Divine Elements of Design as a side hustle over 15 years ago, because I loved creating beautiful spaces for myself, family, and friends. Everyone kept telling me to start an interior design business. Although I have a Masters Degree in Criminal Justice Administration, I completed an Interior Decorating program and took interior design classes at the Art Institute. I also completed a Small Business Owner course at Penn Foster College. Formal education is not required to start a side hustles, I just wanted to make sure I had the credentials to work in the field I wanted. I also completed all of the necessary legal requirements to start my business. Now, I am able to get paid to do the things I enjoy. I am also able to provide great service to my clients. No matter what you enjoy doing, I’m positive you can find a way to market it and create a side hustle.
Business Owner Tax Benefits
Being a small business owner has wonderful tax benefits. There is a laundry list of items you can write off for your business. Speak to your tax consultant about the benefits of starting your side hustle.
Be Prepared for Layoffs
Unless you own your own company, you are not exempt from being laid off. So why not be financially prepared for a possible layoff. The economy is ever changing and even the best Fortune 500 companies can experience layoffs or closures. Even the federal government has had shut downs. By starting your side hustle, you can help build your savings in case your company has a lay off. You can also have a stream of income during the time you are laid off.
Take Your Hobby to The Next Level
A hobby is typically something that you do that you enjoy. Wouldn’t it be great to take your hobby to the next level and get paid to do it? By creating a side hustle around your hobby, you receive the best of both worlds. You can do what you love and earn income from it.
Establish Yourself as an Expert
When you create a side hustle around your hobby, you become an expert in that field. You are able to access Trade Only and Professional options for that field. As a Certified Interior Decorator, I am in a network of other design professionals. I am able to shop at Design Districts, To the Trade Showrooms, and even purchase furniture and home goods at wholesale. I have also been invited to attend events and host classes in the design community.
You Decide How Much You Work
One of the benefits of being your own boss is being able to determine how much or how little you work. I love being able to work my schedule around the needs of my family. During my last pregnancy, I was put on bedrest. I was able to put a pause on my business and concentrate on my health. I did not have to ask permission from anyone or feared losing my job. At the same time, if I want to work more to achieve a particular financial or professional goal, I can adjust my schedule to accommodate it.
Learn More
Although Interior Design and Decorating is in my blood, I love being able to learn more about the trade. When creating your side hustle, you will also learn more about the topics you desire. I have attended various workshops on all aspects of home decor, furnishing, window treatments, etc… I am constantly learning new trends and it is fabulous.
I hope these tips have encouraged you to consider starting a side hustle. Please feel free to ask any questions or leave your suggestions in the comment section.
